What should I do about a failing transfer case in my '99 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd. (please see details)?

I have a '99 Grand Cherokee and a mechanic is telling me I need to have the transfer case replaced (grinding noise when making sharp turns). They've replaced the fluid but the noise remains.

They're giving me an estimate of $2,000 to replace it. Kelly Blue Book says the value of the whole vehicle is only about $4500.

Is $2,000 a reasonable price for this repair? Is there a less expensive way to go?

Thanks!

Thanks|||After changing quite a few of these I would tell you to get a 2nd opinion on this.

If you do need one and want to save a few bucks, consider a used one from a junk yard or craigslist. With so many of thees around you should have no problem finding a good one.
