How to transfer? (read details)?

I have a new computer(pc) and i would like to tranfer, not all, but most of my files over from one computer(pc) to the other(pc),both run xp sp2, can this be done if the computers are set up as a network, or is there something else i have to do? :o)|||I believe that a network is the easiest solution. XP does have a applet called the "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard". I believe that it requires the use of a CAT5 cross over cable. These can be purchased at you local computer store.

But the network would be something that you could set up and use even after your files have been transfered to your new computer. It would require either a hub, network switch, or a router, with the router being the best solution, especially if one of the family members has a WIFI enabled labtop.|||I like the first answer. It will work for almost every condtion, but personally, my choice - assuming they are both desktop units and not laptops - would be to simply remove the hard drive from the old computer and put it into the second bay of your new computer. Its easy to do and windows will detect it automatically. (Obviously, If you want to keep using the old computer this doesn't work unless you drop in a new hard drive there. Those will run you about $200 for a moderate sized one)

That way, all the files are transferred (along with programs) and you simply delete what you no longer want. ( Remember to optimize the disk after all that deletion)

The advantage also is that you have just expanded your hard drive space at no additional cost.|||Map Network Drive - Right Click My Computer and Map Network Drive. This should work to transfer your files to the new computer.

Good Luck|||There are a couple of ways you can do this. First one is, like you said, via network but there is another much faster and easier method via an USB Pen Drive.

These Pen Drives are really cheap if you know where to get them and it's simply connecting it to an USB Port of one computer, put it on the Pen Drive then take it out, put it in USB Port of the other computer and your files are transferred in just a couple of minutes.

For more storage on the Pen Drives you need bigger storage. So, let's say you have an USB Pen Drive with 1GB storage - you could transfer anything up to 1GB.|||Hi There

I'll assume you are using windows XP on old pc.

You can do this. You will need to copy over the follwing folders on your old pc. First click start, Click run, Type 'cmd' , click OK.

In the command prompt that appears you will see the user you are logged in as. If your account has been renamed it will not follow through here. Thats why we check it with the command prompt. Your username will be the last word/words on the line.

click start, click run, type 'C:\documents and settings\%username%'

Click ok.

This is your profile folder. It's full of all kinds of stuff specific to the user account you are using.

Copy the my documents, desktop and favorites folder to another pc, Hard drive, whatever you are using to transfer files.

In the window of your profile folder, In menu bar, click view. Click folder options. click Advanced, untick hide hidden and system folders if this is ticked.

If you use outlook, Browse through your profile folder to this directory.

C:\Documents and settings\%username%\local settings\application data\microsoft\outlook

Copy the .pst files, you will need to import them to new machine.

Perform a search on your PC making sure in the advanced options, Search hidden and system files is enabled.

Search for '.nk2'

Copy these.

Place the my documents , desktop and favourites folder in the user profile of the new pc. Run up outlook and setup your mail account. Close outlook .Put the .pst files in the local settings\application data\microsoft\outlook

Folder under the user profile. Open control panel, double click mail. Click the properties button, click data files and add the .pst's to the list. Place the .nk2's in the same path you found them.

That should cover most of it, of course it's difficult to be sure as each setup can be very different. If you cant follow that, Take this to a tech. Should only take him 30 mins -45 mins work to follow this list tweaking it for your systems.

Let me know how you get on

Cheers
